The Papers of Abraham Lincoln:
Images from the National Archives and Library of Congress

This publication provides early access to images and basic information for documents located and scanned within the collections of the National Archives and the Library of Congress. It is a preview of the Papers of Abraham Lincoln, a project of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. It reflects the Papers of Abraham Lincoln’s effort to locate, scan, transcribe, annotate, and publish electronically all documents written by or to Abraham Lincoln during his lifetime.

This electronic publication does not contain transcriptions of the documents. Annotated transcriptions of these documents and many more, together with attached images and a sophisticated search engine, are available at the Papers of Abraham Lincoln.

To search the text of document titles or to search by date, select Search. Most of the documents in this collection are items of correspondence, and the title of the document is the name of the sender "to" the name of the recipient. Searching for an individual’s name is the best method for retrieving all documents sent by or to that person.

To browse a chronological list of the documents by collection, select Browse.

After conducting a search or browsing to a specific document, select the Doc Num link to view an image of the document. Viewing the document images requires Adobe Acrobat Reader.
